Even though it’s an indie title that came out more than a year ago, and one in which I reached the ending pretty quickly, Cult of the Lamb is still one of my go-to games when I want to feel a controller in my hands but don’t have the brain capacity left for anything too heavy.
True, the cutesy little roguelike-meets-god-game title from Devolver Digital requires quick reflexes and decision-making skills, but it’s also a cozy, comforting game that just happens to give you the option to sacrifice your adorable little followers to the dark void or force them to eat bowls of poop. Whenever I’m scrolling through Twitter and see a post featuring the wooly little titular hero, I get a sense of nostalgia and an urge to jump back in, slash my way through monsters, and bring back some new cultists for my little nature commune
Very recently, though, another game seems to want to get its hands on my little sheepy’s hooves just in time for Halloween. Monster Prom 3: Monster Roadtrip has a planned crossover event starting October 26 that looks to bring The Lamb (and maybe his pals?) over to its world for a completely different type of adventure.
Other than the cute-but-spooky aesthetic, these two indie games don’t seem to have too much in common. The Monster Prom series is, at its core, a dating sim, so it seems like a weird choice to bring The Lamb over into that kind of atmosphere, because usually, cultists will just ask to marry them, and I’m not sure how my Lamb’s husband and two wives would feel about them blowing off their poop-sweeping duties and hitting the road with a bunch of hormone-driven zombies and eldritch deities and such.
Plus, my cultists are—how shall I put this delicately?—incredibly stupid. If I’m away more than a day, I’m likely to walk in to a camp full of overflowing outhouses, empty produce fields, and sick and hungry red-robed dinguses who can’t care for themselves without me. Of course, taking a peek at the trailer, it looks like you’ll be able to either keep them distracted with a ball pit or in line with The Shrine of Common Sense, which is something I’d very much like in my camp at all times, Devolver. Please?
Although… no, no, I can see how the ballpit would be equally effective.
Granted, while Roadtrip still has an end goal of setting your chosen monster up on dates with various hitchhikers, it’s also got a resource management mechanic that’s essential to gameplay, and with all the random junk my Lamb has to gather up to keep their followers happy and healthy, I guess I can see how they might be a good companion to have in the passesnger seat.
Also, I gripe, but I’ve really got no right. It’s not like my cult hasn’t had visitors from other popular indie games before. After all, just a couple of months ago, my camp got a visit from Don’t Starve Together’s adorable spider friend, Webber. That update introduced a new Penitence Mode that nerfed my crown-wearing hero by making them manage the same need for food and sleep as their pathetic followers.
I’m still hungry for more (see what I did there?), but I shouldn’t get too greedy. There’s enough lamb to go around.
