Spider-Man 2’s story continues to ramp up throughout the entire game and finally comes to its climax in the last few missions. Peter and Miles face down the most dangerous enemy yet with the fate of the world on the line.
After the final boss is defeated, the dust settles, and a few cutscenes will play out, giving closure to our characters and a few others affected by the events of the game. Here’s exactly what happened at the end of Spider-Man 2.
**** This Article Contains Spoilers For The End Of Spider-Man 2 ****
Harry Is Barely Alive, Not Dead
After being taken over by Venom and rampaging through the city of New York, Harry almost loses his life when Peter tries to kill Venom. After Miles uses his electricity powers to try and restart his heart, Harry is taken to the hospital and later seen back at home. While Harry briefly died before Miles helped, and the doctor says there’s minimal brain activity, it’s important to note that he is still alive, just barely.
While it may just seem like semantics, considering how close to being brain-dead he is, there is still the chance he can be brought back to life, and Norman is willing to go far to make sure that happens. Earlier in the game, Norman is shown working on another kind of cure for Harry, and since he’s still alive, Norman will continue to work on it.
Is Venom Dead?
After being hit with a direct hit from the Anti-Venom suit to the inside of the chest, Venom unbinds from Harry and is seemingly destroyed along with the rest of the Symbiote structures around the city. While this does seem like a clear death for Venom, there is still a chance the Symbiote lives on. In the comics, Symbiotes have been shown to be incredibly resilient, surviving what seems like death thanks to their bond with a host and hiding a piece of themselves within the host that will one day grow back.
Who Is The Flame
While The Flame was a side story that Peter is able to participate in throughout the game, its ending has pretty big implications for what’s next in this universe. The Flame’s true identity is revealed to be Cletus Kasady, who, in the comics, bonds with the symbiote Carnage. In the final Flame mission, Cletus is shown retrieving another Symbiote from an Oscorp train, with a red color to it, unique to Carnage.
As there is no further follow-up to this story after Cletus retrieves the Symbiote, it’s very possible he will be either the main villain of potential DLC like the first Spider-Man game did or even a major villain of the third mainline Spider-Man game. Carnage is much more powerful than even Venom, making this a huge reveal despite it only being a side story.
The Green Goblin
There are many hints of the Green Goblin becoming a villain throughout both of the Spider-Man games. After the final fight between Venom and the Spider-Men, Norman is shown blaming Spider-Man for what happened to Harry and has another screen showing his incredible anger at everything.
Mixing this motivation with the hints towards Green Goblin in the first game and Norman calling someone to prepare a “G-Serum,” this all but confirms Green Goblin as one of the next major villains in Spider-Man 3. Green Goblin is given his powers through a powerful serum developed by Oscorp, and it’s possible the G-Serum and the cure Norman was working on are one and the same.
Passing The Torch
There are multiple hints throughout the main story of Peter wanting to step away from being Spider-Man and helping the world as a scientist, and the Emily-May Foundation presents that opportunity. Even after its destruction, Peter reveals he will continue his and Harry’s dream to heal the world with science and officially passes the torch of being Spider-Man to Miles.
This doesn’t mean that Peter is done being Spider-Man completely, as he is still shown wearing his Web-Shooters, but it does open up the possibility for a Miles Morales 2, with Peter stepping back and letting Miles take the lead in protecting the city. There are also additional hints in the post-credits scene that Peter will be drawn back to being Spider-Man in the future to face those who are coming after him.
