As it was noticed by the experienced industry experts, the disappointing release of Cyberpunk 2077, and then Battlefield 2042, not only affected the developers’ image, but also made a strong impression on the video games market as a whole, because focusing on the Cyberpunk release, many indie studios have started to delay the output of small projects to give way to the “giant”. At the same time, if an indie developer’s game became famous on the background of the “giant”, it would instantly gain worldwide popularity.
The second negative aspect of the failure of Cyberpunk 2077 and Battlefield 2042 showed itself when other studios announced postponements in order not to repeat the mistakes made by CD Projekt RED and Electronic Arts. For example, the CEO of a major American game company, who preferred to remain anonymous, recently said that when he realized that the two most popular AAA-projects were simply rejected by the community, and Cyberpunk 2077 for some time and still “thrown” from the PS Store, it was decided to postpone all planned releases to better finish projects, prepare them better for release and make sure that they will not have any internal problems.
The director concludes by calling the two biggest flops a wake-up call for the entire industry, something he’s completely right about: even Bethesda recently postponed the space action game Starfield, officially saying they don’t want the project to repeat the fate of Cyberpunk.
