Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard seems to be putting Sony in a complicated situation, mainly due to the Call of Duty saga, on which the company relies heavily to stay competitive in markets as important as the American one.
The Brazilian regulatory bodies have asked the Japanese company (among others) its opinion on the matter, with the aim of discerning the consequences that this acquisition could entail for competition. For its part, Sony says that no game can compete with Call of Dutyespecially in the first-person shooter genre, where they claim Call of Duty “defines the genre”.

Specifically, the statements of the company that owns Playstation have been the following: “No other developer can devote the same level of resources and expertise to game development. Even if it could, Call of Duty is so strongly entrenched that no rival, no matter how relevant, can overcome it. Call of Duty has been the best-selling game almost every year for the past decadeand within its genre, it is overwhelmingly the best-selling game. It is synonymous with first-person shooter games and essentially defines the genre.”
Sony closes purchase of Activision Blizzard by Xbox
It remains to be seen if the Call of Duty saga will end up being exclusive to Xbox or if the strategy will be more similar to the one used with Minecraft, which has remained a multiplatform title. In any case, at the very least we can assume that the marketing rights will no longer belong to Sony, which could have a big effect on the distribution of the saga’s sales on each platform, increasing considerably on Microsoft consoles.
