If there’s one thing that RPGs are great at it’s building a very epic story with compelling characters. These stories are long and arduous journeys that take these characters all around their worlds and challenge them in ways they never thought possible.
Because of this, RPGs are filled with unbelievable and memorable moments. Sea of Stars is no different. The game has a wide roster of characters, each working towards a single goal but coming at it from many different angles. All of these characters have moments to shine in the spotlight, and here’s a list of some of the best moments.
Story Spoilers Ahead
10 Awaking The Sleeper
After players have to deal with the consequences of Garl’s fate, they don’t have much time to breathe. They still need to defeat their enemies while Garl’s time is running out. It helps that Garl is so committed to the task at hand and knows exactly what to do to awaken the Sleeper, a giant dragon that many fear. But Garl isn’t afraid. In fact, he goes on to build a giant oven out of a volcano to bake fresh bread for the dragon. It’s an act of kindness that rallies the Sleeper to his side.
9 Bulgaves And Erlina’s Betrayal
It’s not hard for players to immediately see themselves in the solstice warriors, so the betrayal of their mentors is especially stinging. At the beginning of the game, it appears as if the threat is fairly isolated. There’s just one dweller left for them to vanquish. But the betrayal of Erlina and Bulgaves opens up a whole new door of threats. It’s the inciting incident that turns the plot on its head and has lasting ramifications the characters will have to face all the way until the game’s final moments.
8 Meeting B’st
There’s a huge hole left in the party after Garl’s death. It was only a matter of time before someone joined the party to round It off. And the characters couldn’t ask for a more supportive ally than B’st.
Out of all the characters tortured by the Fleshmancer, B’st’s story is especially heartbreaking. He and his kind were essentially souls condemned to eternally walk the earth without a body. But he’s stuck in one location. It was only after Resh’an perfected living glass that B’st was able to fulfill his destiny.
7 Capturing The Vespertine
One of the party’s first real triumphs in the game is capturing the Vespertine. Serai obviously wants it for her own purposes, but the solstice warriors need it too. It’s also not the easiest ship to come by, especially after Sarai gave up the coin that would make acquiring the ship really easy. Instead, the party has to travel to the realm of the dead, reach the ship’s owner, and then defeat him in one of the hardest battles in the game. It’s also a bonus that it unlocks the game’s first ultimate skill.
6 Ascending To Guardian Gods
Ascending to the guardian gods is the ultimate destiny of all solstice warriors. When the game first began, it wasn’t clear whether Valere and Zale would fill this role. But in the end, they achieved a great power that eluded a lot of their predecessors. Becoming guardian gods allows them to fly around the map, unlocking every single area for exploration. But even more than that, it also led into the final battle of the game, a very unique Space Invaders-inspired mini game.
5 Freeing Serai’s World
The main objective of the solstice warriors is to prevent their worlds from falling completely to the Fleshmancer’s evil scheme. Unfortunately, Serai’s world already had. It became a dystopian nightmare filled with machines and lost souls.
Once the world is uncovered, the social warriors make it their objective to free it, so completing that mission is especially gratifying. It’s a moment of triumph to see the skies clear and the various people that live in this world finally have a glimmer of hope.
4 Meeting Resh’an
It’s not quite clear what to make of the Archivist when he’s first introduced. The player may think that he’s nothing more than a nameless narrator, but he actually plays an extremely pivotal character in the story. He not only becomes a member of the party, he’s also a central figure in the villain’s journey. In many ways, Resh’an story is the story of Sea Of Stars, and finally having the solstice warriors encounter him is an important moment of the game that shouldn’t be overlooked.
3 Traveling The Sea Of Stars
Given the name of the game is actually Sea Of Stars, hearing the phrase said inside the game itself is enough to perk any player’s interest. But even still, little is given about this mysterious place. Once the players are finally able to traverse the Sea of Stars, what follows is quite the incredible sequence that’s only possible on next-generation consoles. Even though Sea Of Stars is inspired by the RPGs of old, the game takes full advantage of its graphics capabilities by turning the actual Sea of Stars into an experience.
2 Garl’s Resurrection
If Garl’s death is one of the saddest moments in Sea Of Stars, then his resurrection is one of the most pleasant. Many players will never even get to experience it as they may just quit the game after its first ending.
But in the game’s real ending, a time machine is utilized to save Garl right before his death. It’s also a pivotal moment because Garl is the determining factor to defeat the Fleshmancer once and for all, solidifying his place as worthy alongside the solstice warriors.
1 Beating Aephorul
Although it may frustrate players to learn that there is a true ending to the game that requires many more hours to complete, it is truly satisfying to see the solstice warriors finally defeating the Fleshmancer. He’s so arrogantly powerful that he doesn’t even bother facing them in the game’s original ending. It takes Garl insulting him to finally trigger the battle. It’s a very long and arduous boss fight, and players will have to have the stamina to go the distance with him. But once he’s defeated, it’s a very satisfying moment.
