Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 1: The Teal Mask (try saying that five times fast) is finally here! Trainers can venture to the land of Kitakami, a quaint and rural land with a fascinating story surrounding an ogre and three loyal Pokemon. The Teal Mask has added a bunch of Pokemon both old and new, bringing Kitakami’s Pokedex up to a modest 200. It’ll be no small feat to fill out the Kitakami Pokedex, that’s for sure — though some of these new moves and abilities may help you out.
The Teal Mask introduces a handful of new Pokemon, such as Ogerpon, the Loyal Three, Dipplin, and Poltchageist. All of the new Pokemon have something unique to bring to the table, be it a new move, a new ability, or both! Make sure to add these Pokemon to your team, as their moves and abilities will surely make your adventure in Kitakami a breeze. And, don’t worry about being over-leveled — the Pokemon in Kitakami will scale according to your progress in the game’s main story!

Abilities
Every Pokemon has a special ability. The Teal Mask introduced five new abilities, each with their own unique effects. Take a look!
Mind’s Eye
Mind’s Eye is the signature ability of the terrifying Bloodmoon Ursaluna, a new variant of the Peat Pokemon that can be found in Kitakami. Mind’s Eye allows Ursaluna to ignore changes to an opponent’s evasion, and ignore changes to its accuracy. This is quite handy on its own, but it gets better; on top of these effects, Mind’s Eye also allows Ursaluna to hit Ghost-type Pokemon with Fighting- and Normal-type attacks! This is huge, as Bloodmoon Ursaluna’s new signature move is a powerful Normal-type attack that you’ll surely want to use without worrying about immunities.
Embody Aspect
Embody Aspect is the signature ability of Ogerpon — though there’s a bit of a twist. Ogerpon doesn’t have this ability normally, instead having one of four abilities depending on the mask it’s wearing. Normally, Ogerpon’s ability would be either Defiant, Mold Breaker, Water Absorb, or Sturdy — however, when Ogerpon terastallizes, it gains more than a shiny coat of crystals. The mask Ogerpon wears wells with power, giving Ogerpon the Embody Aspect ability, which boosts one of Ogerpon’s stats based on its mask. The Teal Mask will boost Ogerpon’s speed, the Hearthflame Mask will boost its attack, the Cornerstone Mask will boost its defense, and the Wellspring Mask will boost its special defense.
Hospitality
Hospitality is the signature ability of Poltchageist and its evolution, Sinistcha. Hospitality is an ability that will only activate in double battles; when Poltchageist enters battle, its teammate will be healed. This ability allows Poltchageist to act as a form of field medic, patching up its allies during a fight while also being able to hold its own with its new signature move, detailed further along in this guide.
Toxic Chain
Toxic Chain is the signature ability of the Loyal Three — Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti. Toxic Chain is a powerful ability for some powerful Pokemon, granting any of the Loyal Three’s attacks a 30% chance to badly poison their targets. This is a mighty effect indeed, as badly poisoned Pokemon will quickly fall to their ailments after just a few turns as the poison damage increases. Make sure to bring a Steel- or Poison-type when fighting the Loyal Three; at least then you won’t have to worry about the poison!
Supersweet Syrup
Supersweet Syrup is the signature ability of Dipplin, the new addition to the Applin line. As befitting a candied apple, Dipplin’s Supersweet Syrup causes a sweet aroma to fill the battlefield when switching in, reducing the evasion of enemies by one stage. This is quite handy for allies who may be packing low accuracy moves like Focus Blast.
Moves
You can’t battle without a move – and the Teal Mask added a handful for you to use. Each one is the signature move of one of the new Pokemon, and the special care that went into them is quite apparent. Take a look!
Blood Moon
Blood Moon is the signature move of the terrifying Bloodmoon Ursaluna, the new forme of the Peat Pokemon. Blood Moon is a fairly straightforward attack, being a Normal-typed Special Attack with a whopping 140 base power. Combined with Ursaluna’s Mind’s Eye ability that allows it to hit the normally immune Ghost-types, this attack lets Ursaluna mow through teams. So what’s the catch? Much like Tinkaton’s Gigaton Hammer, Blood Moon cannot be used twice in a row. However, it’s not much of a drawback, as Bloodmoon Ursaluna has access to other powerful attacks like Earth Power and Focus Blast (which is also affected by Mind’s Eye)!
Matcha Gotcha
Matcha Gotcha is the signature move of the Sinistcha line, the new convergent evolution of the Black Tea Pokemon, Polteageist. Matcha Gotcha is a Grass-type Special Attack with a base power of 80 and an accuracy of 90%. When hit by Matcha Gotcha, the target’s HP is drained, healing Sinistcha by 50% of the damage dealt — and, to top it off, the target may be burned.
Syrup Bomb
Syrup Bomb is the signature move of Dipplin, the latest addition to the Applin line. Syrup Bomb is a Grass-type Special Attack with a base power of 60 and an accuracy of 85%. Syrup Bomb also has the effect of coating the target in a sticky syrup, which lowers their Speed each turn for three turns. Though it may not be boasting much firepower, Syrup Bomb is not without potential. When used with Trick Room, it may be able to “speed up” slow allies thanks to Trick Room’s effect of reversing the turn order.
Ivy Cudgel
Ivy Cudgel is the signature move of Ogerpon, the star of the Teal Mask. Ivy Cudgel is a physical Grass-type attack with a base power and accuracy of 100, and a heightened chance to land a critical hit, dealing even more damage. Ivy Cudgel is special in that based on Ogerpon’s mask, Ivy Cudgel’s type changes. While wearing the Teal Mask, it remains Grass type. The Hearthflame Mask turns it into a Fire-type attack, the Cornerstone Mask turns it into a Rock-type attack, and the Wellspring Mask turns it into a Water-type attack. Good for coverage, and Ivy Cudgel will always be boosted by Ogerpon’s terastallization!
