Wildfrost is a roguelike battle card game that transpires in a never-ending winter landscape, in which players must bring the winter to an end by battling and defeating various enemies. But it’s not as easy as it sounds, especially if you’re a beginner.

Wildfrost challenges players to perfect their deck-building proficiency all while tactically taking down bosses and, of course, surviving through it all. Despite being an appealing cartoon-like game, Wildfrost is just as difficult as any other roguelike game you’ve played. Nonetheless, if you’re a beginner, there are some tips and tricks that should be noted, as they could really help you in the early stages.

10 You’re Going To Die… A Lot

When going into Wildfrost for the first time, it’s very important to know that you’re going to die frequently. That’s just how the game is, especially when just starting out, prior to learning the ins and outs and the mechanics of the game.

Being a roguelike game, dying is essentially part of the progression through the game; this is something you’ll notice as you see the number of names being crossed out in your journal. It’s not a simple game; it does require skill, but as you play more, you’ll eventually get the hang of it, resulting in you surviving more often than not.

9 Reposition Your Heroes Often

Respositioning heroes

Repositioning your heroes is one of the best things you can do in Wildfrost. Whether you need to recall a hero, move a hero to a different lane, or swap a dying hero out for a bit, it’s recommended that you reposition your heroes as often as you can.

Doing this is beneficial toward getting certain heroes out of incoming high-damage attacks, which is great, especially if the hero can’t take the hit as well as another would be able to. That said, be sure to deploy your heroes in different lanes across the board and continue to switch them up often.

8 Keep An Eye On Incoming Attacks Each Turn

Don’t rush through your turns. One common mistake that’s often made is that players focus all of their attention on their next move; however, there’s much more that you should be keeping an eye on during each of your turns. For example, incoming attacks from enemies.

Wildfrost has a super helpful feature: an attack countdown, which essentially tells you when another attack will happen as well as who is going to initiate the attack. Nonetheless, it also depends on where the enemies are placed; enemies in the top and near-middle rows attack first. Ensure you’re not setting your companion up for instant death before completing your turn.

7 Upgrade Your Cards

When playing a fast-paced card-battling game, you’re going to want to keep your cards upgraded to their highest ability as often as you can. Upgrading your cards increases their overall effects, resulting in more powerful turns. Upgrading is a great way to ensure you have fewer cards in your deck to keep an eye on while creating better cards to use toward winning.

If you want to upgrade your shroom or snow cards, for instance, you can stack a number of charms onto them for more power. For players just starting out in Wildfrost, it’s recommended to use combos such as Yuki + Snow and Pepper Flag + Spice, as well as Noomlin Biscuit.

6 Try The Summon-And-Sacrifice Play Style

Summon-and-sacrifice is a Wildfrost play style that’s highly recommended for beginners to try while they’re getting better accustomed to the game. This play style is beneficial if you find yourself struggling to keep your heroes alive.

Let’s say you forgot to check the countdown for the next incoming attack, and your hero is about to die. The summon-and-sacrifice play style offers options for stalling that essentially give you a second chance to save your hero.

5 Focus On Playing Your Good Cards

Playing weak cards in Wildfrost can quickly diminish your chances of a victory, so always be sure to only play your good cards. This kind of goes into play with upgrading your cards as well. It’s highly recommended to use your most powerful cards, such as those that apply block hits, summon hits, or snow.

It’s also important to understand when to use those cards so that you’re not wasting a powerful card when you really could just play a unit and save the card for another turn. Additionally, if you don’t have enough cards, you should use the bell option to refresh your cards instantly.

Another helpful feature Wildfrost has, in addition to the attack countdown, is a tool tips option. Tool tips are basically helpful description cards that come up when you hover your mouse over a card. Use this to your advantage!

These descriptions will tell you everything you need to know about the card, such as its effects and what the symbols on the card mean. This feature is super helpful for beginners to gain an understanding of what their cards actually do so that they can effectively play the right cards.

3 Get New Cards By Finishing Challenges

The more you play Wildfrost, the more you’ll unlock as you complete the construction of the buildings in Snowdell. Certain buildings, like the workshop, will lead you to daily tasks and challenges. Once you complete these tasks, the occupants of the buildings will reward you with new cards.

The cards you’re rewarded with will consist of new play styles that will be beneficial to landing you a victory. As a beginner, if you’re struggling to land that first-time victory, completing these challenges and getting new cards and charms could be beneficial for you.

2 Play Your Companion Cards

Wildfrost has 22 companion cards available; these are cards that essentially make or break your chances of a victory as well. Your companions are your main source of damage being dealt to enemies, so it’s important that you know where they are at all times.

You won’t have access to all 22 of these cards at the beginning of the game; some you will have to unlock through challenges. Though, when you do have companion cards, don’t wait until late in the game to play them. It’s better to play these sooner in the game.

1 Understand The Difference Between Crowns & Charms

Charms vs crowns

Crowns are features that you can apply to any given card before a battle begins. Crowns give you the opportunity to play a card like your leader without any cost. These are often used on companion cards.

Charms, on the other hand, are upgrades for your cards that make the cards more powerful once applied. With more than 10 charms available to players, there are many to choose from. You can apply up to a total of three charms per card, but make sure you’re applying the charms to the most fitting cards.
