In the process of recruiting Karlach and doing the first part of her companion mission in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’re going to visit a toll house situated at the top of a hill with three Paladins of Tyr inside.
Other than housing these fake Paladins that are hunting Karlach, the toll house also has a basement you can find if you’re observant. The basement is home to a secret room that can be unlocked by solving a curious puzzle.

How To Enter The Toll House Basement
The toll house is located on the Risen Road just north of the river atop a small hill. The Paladins of Tyr inside only become hostile if you bring Karlach with you. If you leave her at camp or visit the toll house before recruiting her, you can enter the basement peacefully.
Before you enter the toll house, go to the location marked on the map to find a Toll Collector’s Key on the ground. This key will unlock the door to the inner rooms in the basement.
With the key in hand, enter the toll house’s main room. Look directly to the right of the door, and you’ll see an Ornate Wooden Hatch. Interact with it to enter the lower floor.
How To Solve The Basement Secret Room Puzzle
- Unlock the door in the basement with the Toll Collector’s Key. You can also lockpick it if you succeed in some dice rolls. Or use Knock, if one of your spellcasters knows the spell.
- Enter this area and loot everything you see. Sneak past the traps.
- In the last room, you’ll see a stone wall blocking the way to a hidden room.
- To enter the secret room, split your party and have two party members sit on the stone chairs on either side of the stone wall.
- A mechanism will trigger, and the stone wall will give way for you to enter inside.
- There is another trap here. Avoid it or disarm it.
If you trigger the trap, the vents in the room will start spilling out Acid. You can block the Acid by dropping a vase or box on top of the vents. Blocking the vents also drains away any remaining acid in the room, making navigation easier.
Enter the room to find multiple weapons propped up on a wooden table. You’ll also find a Gilded Chest with some gold and a necklace, as well as a Wooden Chest containing Gloves of Heroism.
