There are few things more adorable than a group of Mooncalves dancing around under the moonlight. After encountering one during Beasts Class and completing the quest The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom, players can go out into the wild and rescue Mooncalves for their Vivariums. These beautiful magical beasts can be found in various locations across the world of Hogwarts Legacy, however, they can be easy to miss since they only show up at night.
Mooncalves are not only pretty to look at, they also produce valuable materials players need to upgrade their gear. Mooncalf Fur can be collected inside Vivariums at regular intervals provided you keep the creatures properly fed and groomed. Much like other magical beasts, Mooncalves can also be bred by placing a male and a female specimen in a Breeding Pen.

Where To Find Mooncalves In The Wild
There are no less than three Mooncalf Dens located conveniently close to Hogwarts and another two of them further down south. You generally don’t need more than a couple of specimens to maintain a steady supply of Mooncalf Fur, but just in case you like the creatures so much that you want to adopt a whole herd of them, you can find the location of all their dens down below.
South Hogwarts Mooncalf Den
This first den is located just east of Hogwarts close to the Quidditch pitch. There’s even a Floo Flame right next to it appropriately named Mooncalf Den, so you can’t miss it.
Forbidden Forest Mooncalf Dens
The Forbidden Forest is home to not just one but two Mooncalf dens. The first one is located in the southern part of the region next to the Spinners Cave. There’s also a rare Unicorn den just a stone’s throw away to the east. The quickest way to get there is to fast travel to Upper Hogsfield and then walk west. From the first den, travel northwest in a straight line and you’ll reach the second one in no time. Alternatively, fast travel to Pitt-Upon-Ford and make your way south from there.
Feldcroft Mooncalf Den
This next one can be found close to the hamlet of Feldcroft in the region bearing the same name. You visit the area often while helping out Sebastian Sallow so you’re probably already familiar with it. From Feldcroft, travel straight south and you’ll soon spot the den on a hill overlooking the sea.
Poidsear Coast Mooncalf Den
The last den is located just north of Poidsear Castle. If you fast-travel to the castle’s Floo Flame you’ll spot the den right in front of you across a ravine. You can go around the ravine to reach it, but it’s faster to use a flying mount instead.
How To Catch A Mooncalf
Unlike Hippogriffs or Kneazles, Mooncalves are fairly easy to capture. The creatures are shy and will run away as soon as you approach, however, they’re slower than other magical beasts so you can easily catch up with them while sprinting. The only thing worth keeping in mind while trying to catch a Mooncalf is that they only come out of their dens at night.
To capture a Mooncalf you’ll need to press the prompt three times to subdue the creature and a fourth time to actually capture it. Control spells like Levioso and Glacius come in handy if you need to immobilize them while Disillusionment is a must while trying to sneak up on them.
