Risk of Rain Returns is a remaster of a cult-classic roguelike with a cast of characters called Survivors with different abilities and varying playstyles. You start with two, but up to 15 more can be unlocked as you progress through the game and meet the requirements for unlocking them.
One of the main reasons why the original game was so beloved was because each Survivor is completely unique, necessitating a completely different approach to a new run with each one. Players will want to unlock all Survivors as soon as possible to enjoy the game to its fullest.

How To Unlock All Survivors
There are sixteen playable characters in Risk of Rain Returns.
Survivor |
How To Unlock |
---|---|
Commando |
Unlocked by default. |
Huntress |
Unlocked by default. |
Enforcer |
Defeat the Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant, and Colossus in any order. You don’t need to complete these requirements in a single run; the game tracks each kill and unlocks the Enforcer once you’ve defeated all required bosses. All three bosses have a chance of spawning in the first level, meaning you can farm out the Enforcer very quickly. |
Bandit |
Complete the third level in a single run. Difficulty doesn’t matter. You’ll unlock the character once you reach the fourth level. |
HAN-D |
Find HAN-D on the sixth level. Typically found on the leftmost side of the level inside some broken crates. |
Engineer |
Buy 40 drones across multiple runs. Only counts for single-player and co-op runs; drones bought in Providence Trials don’t count. |
Miner |
Find and interact with the Miner in the Magma Barracks. The Miner is guarded by an elite boss hidden inside a magma tunnel on the bottom right side of the map. You’ll need to walk across Magma until you reach him. Best attempted with high health or high mobility characters. |
Sniper |
Beat the game once (Clear all levels). Difficulty doesn’t matter. |
Acrid |
Found in the Sunken Tomb, one of the two possible maps of the third level. Interact with the crate on the top right corner of the map to reveal Acrid. Defeat him to recruit him as a new character. |
Mercenary |
Beat the game five times (Clear all levels). Difficulty doesn’t matter. |
Loader |
Collect 30 unique items in a single run. Easily achievable if you reach the later levels without dying. |
Chef |
Collect Meat Nugget, Bustling Fungus, Sprouting Egg, Bitter Root, and Foreign Fruit in a single run. Bitter Root doesn’t spawn unless you unlock it by reaching 650 Health on any character. The Artifact of Command makes this much easier to achieve. |
Pilot |
Collect 15 different Monster Logs. Have a low chance of dropping from any enemy. |
Artificer |
Visit 10 unique maps. There are two variations of every map, meaning this can only be achieved by consistently reaching level 5. |
Drifter |
Recycle six drones in a single run. Recyclers work by destroying your equipped drone and giving you a random item as a reward. |
Secret Survivor: Robomando |
Find the Strange Battery on the fifth level map, Temple of the Elders, in the Drizzle difficulty. Place the Strange Battery in the hidden chest on the sixth level: Contact Light (bottom right corner of the map). End the run and enter a new one at a higher difficulty. Find the hidden chest on the second level and take out the Strange Battery. Reach Stage 3 and defeat the boss, but take the teleporter between 22 and 23 minutes. Interact with the green icon and place the Strange Battery, spawning Robomando. Die to Robomando to unlock him as a survivor. |
