While much of Baldur’s Gate 3 is centered around its fantastic combat and the various quests the game throws at you, it also has its fair share of challenging puzzles to solve. Early on, one of the trickiest puzzles I found was how to open Selune Chest in Baldur’s Gate 3. Here’s how I did it.

How to open Selune Gilded Chest in Owlbear Cave in BG3

While it may be different for you, I came across the Owlbear Cave after visiting Emerald Grove and then heading west toward various quest locations. You’ll likely meet a group of three NPCs en route. Follow them to the cave, or see my map above. Follow the instructions below to open the Selune Gilded Chest in Owlbear Cave.

As you enter the cave, there is a short path on the left before you get to the owlbear. Take this path, climb down at the end, and you’ll be in a small cave with a blue glowing chest and a statue. To open the chest, you need to read a prayer in the right spot, removing the magic protection on the chest

The prayer you need to read is behind the giant statue facing the chest. I highly recommend saving your game at this point, as you need several roles to go your way if you’re going to get into the chest. Now jump across from next to the chest to the small area behind the statue. There’s a book on the floor here, but also a prayer on a piece of paper. You’ll need one of your party members to pass a Perception roll to spot it successfully.

Once you see it, use any of your characters to examine it until one of them passes a Religion roll. NPC Shadowheart is a good choice here unless you’re also playing as a cleric. If all of your party fail their Religion roles, simply reload your save and try again until they do. Once passed, get the character who passed the role to pick up the note and jump back to the chest

How to beat the trap on the Gilded Chest in Baldur’s Gate 3

Put the prayer note on the floor next to the chest, then use the NPC who passed the Prayer role to read it once more while it is on the ground. This will remove the magical trap from the chest. You’ll know the curse has been removed because the blue gilded chest will stop glowing. It is now safe to open Selune Chest, which will net you a nice set of medium armor, The Oak Father’ Embrace, which will damage undead creatures that hit the wearer but strengthen beast attacks on them. It’s a bit niche but very useful in undead dungeons.
