Stat growth is different for every tactical RPG, like Final Fantasy Tactic’s class-based stat growth or Fire Emblem’s stat-chance growth. Unicorn Overlord implemented a very unique and clever way of this mechanic through Growth Type.
In this guide, I’ll discuss the best and most recommended Growth Types for each class in Unicorn Overlord, so you can maximize each character you recruit along the way!
Best Growth Type for every Class in Unicorn Overlord
Growth Type and Stat Growth explained
Stat Growth works differently in Unicorn Overlord. Once you check your character’s details, you’ll see a bunch of letters beside your stats (refer to the image above). Each stat is ranked from E to S, E having the lowest stat growth and S having the most stat growth while leveling up.
Above the Stats, you’ll also see the Growth Type, which affects stats in a way where you can effectively negate ranked E stats or double-down on a character’s stat affinity (Rank S Stat Growth).
Here are all the Growth Types and their respective effects:
Growth Type | Stats Affected (2nd Growth Type set to All-Rounder) |
Hardy | Increase in HP, Phys. ATK, Phys. DEF, Mag. ATK, Mag. Def, Evasion |
Offensive | Increase in HP, Phys. ATK, Mag. ATK, Accuracy, Evasion |
Defensive | Increase in Phys. DEF, Mag. DEF, Accuracy, Evasion, Guard Rate Decrease in Mag. ATK |
Precise | Increase in Phys. ATK, Mag. ATK, Accuracy, Evasion, Crit. Rate, Initiative Decrease in HP |
Lucky | Increase in Accuracy, Evasion |
Keen | Increase in Phys. ATK, Mag. ATK, Accuracy, Evasion, Crit. Rate |
Guardian | Increase in Phys. ATK, Phys. DEF, Mag. ATK, Accuracy, Evasion, Guard Rate |
Go-Getter | Increase in Accuracy, Evasion, Crit Rate, Initiative Decrease in Mag. ATK |
All-Rounder | Increase in Phys. ATK, Mag. ATK, Accuracy, Evasion |
Best Growth Types for each Class
Growth Types can sometimes have negative and positive effects on your overall stat increase, as seen in this table by Reddit user Stmack. In this scenario, they used a level 20 Josef and tried out all Growth Type combinations. Josef’s Growth Type combinations varied from a -14.5 to 19 total stat increase in this scenario.
Based on this experiment, you must double down on your character’s stat preference and choose a Growth Type that boosts your other stats instead of lowering them if you want to min-max your character.
With all that said, here are some of my recommended Growth Types for each mercenary hire to maximize stat growth:
Class | Growth Type |
Cleric | Go-Getter and All-Rounder |
Fighter | Hardy and Defensive/Guardian |
Gladiator | Offensive and Keen/Lucky/Precise/All-Rounder |
Gryphon Knight | Lucky and Offensive |
Hoplite | Defensive and Hardy/Precise/Lucky |
Housecarl | Offensive and Lucky/Go-Getter |
Hunter | Keen and Lucky/Hardy |
Knight | Offensive and Defensive |
Lord | TBD |
Priestess | TBD |
Radiant Knight | All-Rounder and Offensive |
Sellsword | Offensive and All-Rounder |
Shaman | Go-Getter and Precise |
Soldier | Keen and Lucky/Hardy/Offensive |
Swordfighter | TBD |
Thief | Lucky and Offensive |
Warrior | Offensive and Lucky/All-Rounder |
Witch | TBD |
Wizard | Offensive and Keen/Lucky |
Remember, these Growth Types are not set in stone, and these are recommendations as I like the goal of min-maxing my characters. You can experiment with completely going off-the-rails with your character build, just remember to save first before farming levels with your experimental Growth Types.
