True to the original, inventory management is a big concern in Alan Wake 2 as well. Players start off with very limited inventory space that can quickly get crowded, forcing them to discard stuff they might not want to.
Inventory Upgrades in Alan Wake 2 come in the form of Satchels that can be picked up during the Saga Anderson sections. There are four satchels in total, and each one unlocks an additional row of inventory space for Saga Anderson. Alan, on the other hand, can only upgrade his inventory by investing in one of the Words of Power.

Saga Inventory Upgrade Locations – Satchels
Saga increases her inventory space by picking up satchels in the game that are scattered across the game. There are four of these inventory upgrades for Saga. Here are all their locations.
Inventory Upgrade Satchel #1: Cauldron Lake General Store
Chapter |
Return 2 – The Heart |
Head to the General Store—the store where you first see Nightingale’s corpse with Alex Casey and Deputies Mulligan & Thornton—and look inside. At the back of the store, there is a display case with a Shotgun that you can unlock, and directly underneath the Shotgun display case is a brown satchel sitting on a box.
Inventory Upgrade Satchel #2: Previously Flooded Area
Chapter |
Return 2 – The Heart |
After Saga defeats Nightingale in the Overlap, the water levels in the surrounding areas will recede, and the body of Alan Wake will wash up to shore. Here, you’ll get the optional quest to investigate the previously flooded area in search of clues. Explore the beach until you come across a fallen log that Saga can squeeze under to reach a hidden area. There is a Cult Stash just ahead with an inventory upgrade inside. Open the Stash by pressing the buttons that light up in the same order they trigger.
Inventory Upgrade Satchel #3: Bright Falls Fresh Seafood Shop
Chapter |
Return 5 – Old Gods |
After escaping the Overlap in Return 5 – Old Gods, you’ll return to Bright Falls with the ability to access areas you couldn’t before without the Bolt Cutters, which you will have unlocked inside the Overlap. One of these areas is the Seafood Shop just a little ways away from the Oh Deer Diner. Look towards the lake from the Diner and follow the road west towards the Elderwood Palace Lodge. There is a faded sign on the street to your left saying “Fresh Seafood – Fish & Chips.”
Look for a chain link fence with a lock here and open it with your Bolt Cutters. Inside, there is a small shack that you can enter with a Cult Stash. The Stash wants you to solve a puzzle involving the rising and falling tides, but if you want to skip the hassle, the code is 6-9-7.
Inventory Upgrade Satchel #4: New Game+
The fourth inventory upgrade hasn’t been found. There are rumors that the last and final inventory upgrade for Saga will come with the yet-to-be-released New Game+ Nightmare Difficulty. There is no release date for this mode yet, but it has been confirmed by Remedy.
Alan Wake Inventory Upgrades – Words of Stuff
Unlike Saga, Alan’s inventory upgrades are more esoteric in nature, requiring investment into a specific Word of Power to be unlocked. This upgrade is called Word of Stuff – Magic Pocket and can only be invested once you have found and unlocked a Word of Stuff upgrade from the game. Currently, there are two known locations where players can get Word of Stuff.
Word of Stuff Location #1: Oceanview Hotel
Chapter |
Initiation 5: Room 665 |
In Initiation 5, you’ll be able to reach Floor 2 of the Oceanview Hotel. Head up there and look for the Word of Power directly above the bar by shining your torch at it. Focus your torch for a few seconds to unlock the Word of Stuff.
Word of Stuff Location #2: Poet’s Cinema
Chapter |
Initiation 8 – Zane’s Film |
Head to the rooftop section of the Cinema and look for the spotlights (top left section on the map). Walk towards the spotlights while keeping an eye on the building adjacent to the one you’re standing on. Keep your torch facing the neighboring building, and you should see the Word of Stuff peeking out from behind a corner.
Once you have a Word of Stuff, go to the Writer Room with Alan and assign the upgrade to Word of Stuff – Magic Pocket to increase Alan’s inventory space.
