Assassin’s Creed Mirage tells the story of Basim ibn Ishaq, a street thief-turned Hidden One (assassin). Players new to the franchise, or those who have not kept up with the constant releases, may feel like this one is a fresh start for the series.
While it is a return to the glory days of Assassin’s Creed mechanics, the characters within are familiar faces that have important ties to the series. The Hidden One who eventually recruits Basim to their cause is Roshan, but just who is she?
Who Is Roshan?
Roshan is a master assassin of the Hidden Ones and is responsible for recruiting and training Basim ibn Ishaq. Fans of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will recognize her as the younger version of the character who appeared in the final released DLC. In this, Roshan works together with Eivor to dispatch two prominent foes together. It was the last tie-in effort linking Assassin’s Creed Valhalla with Mirage, as Basim already played an important role. Roshan, tired and weary of her past with the Hidden Ones, suggests that she left and eventually returned to the organization.
Younger Roshan, as she appears in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, is a strong mentor and guide for Basim. Under her tutelage, he is able to join the Hidden Ones as a full-fledged member before eventually becoming a Master Assassin himself. Roshan bint-La-Ahad works together with Basim to overthrow and assassinate members of the Order in an effort to achieve the goals of the Hidden Ones during the events of Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
A loyal warrior with an assassin’s honor, Roshan leads from the shadows as one of the senior members of the Hidden Ones stationed in and around Baghdad. Her sense of justice and desire to protect her allies causes her distress at times, but her objective has always remained the same. Roshan familial feelings toward the Hidden Ones grounded her commitment, and she swore to uphold the Creed and never betray her brethren.
Throughout Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Roshan appears as a stout, reserved, and taciturn figure of the Hidden Ones. Her compassion and love for the members of the Creed shines through in her care and guidance of Basim, her willingness to rescue him from the streets of Anbar when his life was in peril, and the countless moments throughout the game where she supported the Hidden Ones both front and center and offstage.
While her fate with the Hidden Ones may not always have been perfectly aligned, she never gave up on her beliefs or promised to uphold the Creed or protect her brothers and sisters within. Assassin’s Creed has featured many characters both fiercely loyal to the brotherhood and on the verge of betrayal, but Roshan perfectly embodies the Altair-like sense of justice to her cause, which is only amplified through her actions.
