Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best games you can play, with many weapons, spells, and other means of fighting. Weapons are one of the primary things you’ll fight with, and crafting is one of the best ways to get them. Like other RPGs, crafting requires various materials, and finding them can be troublesome.
Mithril Ore is one of those materials that you will need to craft weapons in the game. There is only one place in Baldur’s Gate 3 where you can find this ore, and it’s one of the hardest places to reach during Act 1. To help you, this Baldur’s Gate 3 guide will tell you where to find the Mithril Ore.
Updated by Abigail Angell on November 14th, 2023: With the benefit of multiple playthroughs, our writers have been able to advise players on how to calm the explosive lava near one of the Mithril deposits, and the consequences of doing so.
Where To Find Mithril Ore
All known Mithril Ore deposits are located in the Underdark city of Grymforge. After reaching Grymforge, make your way to The Adamantine Forge area via a catwalk puzzle. Here you can roam around and find two Mithril ore deposits. Both are in the vicinity of the Ancient Forge Waypoint.
That said, Grymforge is one of the advanced areas of Act One. You have to be careful, as the Mithril Ore is surrounded by exploding lava and guarded by enemies. These include a Lava Elemental (found near the Monk’s Amulet) and Lava Mephits.
While killing the Lava Elemental will calm the exploding Lava near the Mithril deposit in the southwest, it may negatively impact some Paladin oaths, as the Elemental isn’t Hostile.
How To Get To Grymforge
Once you have reached the Underdark, head to the Decrepit Village. The nearest Fast Travel location is the Underdark – Beach (X:23, Y:-210) Waypoint.
When you first arrive in the Decrepit Village, you will enter a cinematic and speak with a Duergar NPC. You can fight him and his party during the conversation to get access to their boat, located on the nearby dock. This boat is used to travel to Grymforge.
Resting before fighting the Duergar is a good idea, as they are tough enemies. Additionally, a method of seeing invisible enemies will pay off big in this encounter.
On your way, you encounter another boat of NPCs, one of which (Corsair Greymon) will board your ship to talk. You will need to either fight this group or de-escalate the situation. There are three ways to resolve the encounter:
- Deceive them, which has a difficulty level of 15.
- You can also use Intimidate on them with a difficulty level of 10.
- Lastly, push Corsair Greymon into the water to start a fight.
Make the choice that feels right for your character; every outcome will lead toward Grymforge.
How To Get Mithril Ore
Once you’ve found a Mithril Ore deposit, attack it will any member of your party to harvest the Mithril. Force or Bludgeoning damage is most effective here. Once the deposit is broken, it will drop a single Mithril Ore, which you can put into your inventory. This ore can be used to craft the Adamantine Splint Armor, the Adamantine Shield, or any of the several other Adamantine items.
How To Defeat The Magma Mephits
The Magma Mephits are located off to the side of the path down to the Adamantine Forge. There is a highly visible deposit of Mithril ore beyond a narrow bridge over lava. Players who walk onto the bridge will be ambushed by two waves of Magma Mephits. These enemies are immune to fire damage, vulnerable to cold damage, and explode on death.
To fight the Magma Mephits, it is advised to drink elixirs of Fire Resistance. There is one located on the table behind the Mephits. Additionally, Arrows of Ice, Ray of Frost, and Ice Knife are all highly effective. Avoid melee attacks when possible, as their short-range Death Burst ability can easily down a party member who is too close.
