The Gauntlet of Shar is a unique dungeon in Baldur’s Gate 3 that will directly tie into Shadowheart’s Companion story. The Gauntlet is run by those who wish to become Dark Judiciars, and that is Shadowheart’s dream.

Running the Gauntlet and completing its three trials is only one part of being prepared to finish this dungeon. A potential Dark Judiciar will need to kill the Nightsong, and they will need to Spear Of Night to do so.

The Silent Library

To find the spear, you’ll first need to find the Silent Library. At the back wall of the Gauntlet, past the first two tests, will be stairs leading to the lower level. On the lower level, travel further down the hall and go through the second doorway on your right. This doorway will have a blue wall of light, signifying the area of effect of the Silence spell.

When inside the Library, all characters will have the Silence effect and won’t be able to cast spells. Your priority should be destroying the orb in the center that is casting the Silence spell, letting you easily defeat the remaining enemies after it is destroyed. This orb can also be targeted with long-range spells from outside of the Silence area of effect, letting you destroy it before the fighting even starts.

After clearing out the room and getting inside the final area with the pedestal in the middle, you’ll be faced with the riddle, “What can silence the Nightsong?” Be wary of the many traps in this area, and have someone with high perception leading your party. Go back towards the entrance of the library and go to the bookshelves along the left side. The bookshelf to the left will have a book, “Teachings Of Loss: The Nightsinger,” take it and place it back on the pedestal to open the secret passage. Within the hidden room will be a small statue in the middle, with the Spear Of Night front and center.

How To Use The Spear Of Night

Shadowheart Holding The Spear Of Night

The Spear Of Night is a powerful spear that can be used but is also an important story item that will be needed later in this dungeon. After going to the final area of the dungeon and finding the Nightsong, Shadowheart will have a difficult decision to make, with you also needing to make a choice. Should Shadowheart kill the Nightsong, the spear will be used and kept afterward as a weapon to use. If Shadowheart decides against killing the Nightsong, she will throw the spear away.

If this happens, The Spear will be returned to you later after the events at the end of Act 2, and will now be the Spear Of Selune, with a new brighter look to match Shadowhearts new path. No matter which choice you make, the spear in some way will be returned and is usable for later sections of the game. The Spear will match whatever future path Shadowheart decides to take after the events with the Nightsong, giving her the weapon of her chosen deity to wield. Both forms of the spear will deal 1D8 damage, but Selune’s Spear Of Night does a bit more. Selune’s Spear Of Night also gives Darkvision along with advantage on Wisdom saving throws and Perception checks.
