Baldur’s Gate 3 already has a thriving modding community, a community which is providing players with essential content like Astarion without his six-pack or a nice haircut for Shadowheart.
As the scene continues to grow, we’re starting to see more high-effort mods and more substantial content. One of the aspects of the game that has a lot of potential is additional classes and subclasses.
Baldur’s Gate 3 only has three to four subclasses per class, leaving many of the existing DnD 5e subclasses unavailable. There is also the endless potential of homebrew subclasses, which is exactly what ThisRockIFound has done with their Circle of Stormchasers Druid subclass.
The Circle of Stormchasers is made up of boisterous, braggadocious and fiercely competitive Druids.
The author believes their Stormchaser Druid subclass fits thematically with the various other storm-related subclasses that exist in Baldur’s Gate 3. To illustrate, Clerics have a Tempest Domain, Monks have Way of the Four Elements, Sorcerers have Storm Sorcerer and so on.
The description of Circle of Stormchasers Druid, authored by the mod creator, reads as follows, “The Circle of Stormchasers is made up of boisterous, braggadocious, and fiercely competitive Druids charged with reforging the destructive forces of nature into a tool better suited to protect it. As such, they rarely form tight-knit communities and are generally content working as guides on seafaring vessels, communing with the elemental planes, or, most commonly, calling down primal retribution on polluters and trophy hunters.”
The subclass is inspired by the Fury Druid subclass from Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. In that game, the Druid shapeshifts into a Storm Blight rather than a traditional animal shape.
Subclass Features
As you’d expect, Circle of Stormchasers grants the Druid all the lightning and ice elemental spells at max level. You start with Shocking Grasp, Thaumaturgy, Thunderwave and Fog Cloud and work your way up to Cone of Cold and a special ‘tornado’ re-skin of the spell Maelstrom.
As for subclass features, ThisRockIFound has implemented well-thought-out and balanced spells that really embody the idea they’re trying to cultivate with the Stormchaser Druid. At the second level, you’ll be able to use your wild shape to turn into a Storm Shift. In this form, your character will be surrounded by crackling lightning, you’ll gain temporary hit points equal to three times your Druid level, and you’ll be able to add your proficiency bonus to rolls involving lightning, thunder and cold damage.
At the sixth level, you’ll unlock Storm’s Reach. This is a bonus action that forces a creature within 18m to make a dexterity saving throw. On a fail, they’ll take xD8s (based on proficiency) of cold, thunder or lightning damage. On a success, they take half the damage.
There is also a feature for the 14th level, but this requires additional mods that allow the player to level past the game’s cap of 12. You can read more about the subclass features on the mod page.
I’m excited to see the full modding potential of Baldur’s Gate 3 as we continue to see new high-quality mods like this.
