The journey to recruit Baldur’s Gate 3’s final companion leaves quite the trail of bodies and mayhem behind. One major event is the robbing of the Baldur’s Gate Counting House. The cult of the absolute steals all the bank’s money, and Rakath, the head banker, asks you to recover it.
The quest takes some tracking, puzzle-solving, and ultimately some good old fighting. When you finally track down the gold, it’s up to you to return if you please, and how much. Before any thought of reward, however, you need to get the job done.
The Counting House
This quest begins in the most secure vault of the Counting House. You see Bhaalists and changelings rob the place blind and leave some stab-happy killers to clear out the guards. Your first task is to keep Rakath alive. He can’t give the quest, much less reward you if he’s dead.
Get down from the vault entrance as fast as you can. Use flight potions or spells if you have them, just make sure you can divert attacks off Rakath, or heal him. The Bhaalists aren’t very threatening to your party, but their stunning gaze and Aura of Murder can stack damage fast.
Speaking to Rakath
With the Bhaalists dead, you can speak to Rakath. He will task you with returning the bank’s gold for the good of Baldur’s Gate. Also, because he will reward you if you do.
The first clue is inside the now-empty bank vault. Walk your party inside and at least one of them should pass an investigation check. That check will tell you the robbers came from the sewer, so to the sewers you shall go.
Navigating The Sewers
You can reach the sewer in a few places, but the easiest choices are through a sewer hole cover in the lower city, or through the Emperor’s room in the Elfsong Tavern. You need to head through the west side of the sewers, past some grease elementals and their wizard leader. Continue on until you find an abandoned cistern.
Where you need to go is through a closed sluice gate near a large water pressure device. You need to use it to get your door open. A perception check can show you a sluice valve, and succeeding a Strength check opens the gate, bypassing the puzzle. If you can’t open that, then you have to get both water pressure and temperature into the green zone on their gauges.
One twist on each valve will do it, but start with the water valve first. The effect isn’t instant, both valves will gain a condition and slowly fill to the required amounts. Don’t over-activate them, and the door will open shortly.
Meeting The Stonelord
Go through the sluice and you’ll find Minsk, the Stonelord, and a phony Jaheira paying Roah Moonglow the stolen coin. You need to fight Minsc and the Bhaalist to proceed. Turn on non-lethal damage. You can stop Roah here if you’re fast enough, but if not, don’t fret you will get the chance.
Battle For The Guild
If Roah escaped, travel to the Heapside Strand waypoint and head to the Guild entrance. The Zhentarim and the Guild will locked in combat. Roah will try to convince you to join her, but if you want the gold, don’t help her.
Attack the Zhentarim.
They’re a mix of classes all around level 11, but you have the aid of the guild members as well. The fight isn’t difficult since it’s one of the few occasions you’re not horribly outnumbered. Once Roah is dead, or unconscious if you want her trader loot, take the bag of gold off her.
Returning The Gold
With the gold in hand, head back to the Counting House. You don’t need to do any of the entrance puzzles again, you can just head down. You don’t need to give it all back. With a successful persuasion check, or similar skill check, you can keep half the gold for yourself.
Rakath will give you a key to High Security Vault N⁰9. Inside you’ll find the Elegant Studded Leather. It’s one of the best light armors in the game, granting a high base AC, advantage on stealth checks, a bonus to your initiative, and a free casting of Shield once per long rest. Combined with the gold reward from Rakath himself, and you get quite the pay out.
