Genshin Impact Fontaine Archon Quest ACT III “To the Stars Shining in the Depths”: In-Depth Review and Discussion
The next two following Acts of the Archon Quests are heavily tied to a new area and faction of Fontaine, as the Traveler and Paimon explore and uncover the secrets of the Fortress of Meropide, including meeting some new characters and reuniting with old friends. Act 3 in particular introduces us to the Fortress, in what seems to be a kind of a prison isn’t really a prison in itself.
In fact, the Fortress acts as an independent area that has no involvement with any outside affiliations like the Court of Fontaine. In the Fortress, the people of Fontaine who were sentenced here have to serve their punishment by sheer hard work. Once they are done, they can either leave to the outside world or choose to stay in the Fortress of Meropide, which surprisingly many of the citizens of Fontaine choose to do so.
With such a structured underworld sub-region, there’s no doubt that it will be led by someone who is amazing and hones such amazing leadership skills. As such we are introduced to a new character, Wriothesley, who is known to be the administrator of the Fortress of Meropide. He has an intimidating appearance to him but acts in a suave and confident manner. In these next two acts, we will be highly involved with Wriothesley as we play by the quests.
Introduction to Arlecchino: Fontaine’s Main Antagonist
The highlight of the Archon Quest is the introduction of our region’s main Antagonist, The Knave, who also goes by Arlecchino. Arlecchino was first introduced in the teaser video where we get to see what she looks like. Initially, she gives off the impression of an intimidating character who can easily compose themselves while also simultaneously losing their façade and cool.
With Wanderer and Tartaglia‘s voice lines about the Knave informing us how she is a “Wolf in Sheep’s clothing” and will not hesitate to betray the people she swore allegiance to, she already had an impending loom surrounding her for the majority of the player base. Although we do not directly face her in Act 3, we do see a glimpse of how she acts, starting with her dynamic with Furina and Neuvillete at the infamous tea party they have.
Arrlechino on the outside shows her diplomatic nature, talking to both the characters in a professional manner. But of course, we see a hidden side to her with the way she smoothly talks about certain topics. It seems like we have an interesting antagonist amongst us which is exciting to see.
Bad Pacing and Overall Story Issues
The quest starts in a mundane way, with Paimon suggesting that we read a few interesting books she picked up along the way in their resident place Navia assigned them since the missing disappearance case has been solved and hence no impending doom seems to pose a threat towards the Traveler and Paimon as of now.
Afterward, Neuvillette meets up with them and tasks him with an objective: to find the whereabouts of the missing Harbinger, Tartaglia. The quest initially sets off quite nicely, as the game sets the main objectives of the next two acts, showing us the tension rising between Arlecchino and Furina, and introducing us to Wriothesley and Sigewinne. Unfortunately, aside from the initial 30 minutes, the quest dwindles down to a long overhaul of NPC dialogues and repetitive interactions to fill in certain quest objectives which made the story-telling quite boring. The stakes only ever pick up during Act 4.
Final Thoughts
Act 3 had an overall good set-up for what’s to come, but the playthrough afterward is quite lackluster and boring, in comparison to ACT I and ACT II. Players may find it hard to sit through ACT 3, as the real states go high during ACT 4. Nevertheless, it introduced the Knave as our 4th Harbinger and even gave us glimpses of other characters which was nice to witness.
