Hogwarts Legacy has many RPG elements added in to help players get stronger as they play, especially through exploration and side quests. One of these elements is the gear system, allowing you to find better gear and upgrade your different stats based on the gear you find. You can also change the looks of varying gear pieces to keep your character strong while still looking the way you want them to.
Some gear items found will have a question mark icon over them and will say they are unidentified. These gear items are rarer and require identification before you can equip them. While there is an extra step to equip these items, they are well worth the time and can be much stronger than your current gear pieces.

How To Identify Items
To identify your gear, you’ll need to unlock the Room Of Requirement. After being introduced to the Room of Requirement, the first and only table in the room that it comes with is the Desk of Description. As you collect infidelities gear pieces, take them to the table and hold the interact button immediately to identify all your unidentified gear pieces in your inventory. This is a very quick and painless process, allowing you to bulk identify items without any extra steps, but it does require a trip to the Room Of Requirement whenever obtaining one.
This extra step does offer gear pieces with higher stats and better traits than the usual gear pieces you find. The Room of Requirement is used as a playground for players, allowing them to put in other tables and grow plants and brew potions in their own area, making the trips to this room to identify items much more beneficial. More powerful and legendary gear pieces also have a much higher likelihood of being unidentified, making identification much more integral.
Managing Gear And Identified Gear
Identified gear is much stronger than usual gear and will be given to players randomly when looting items on the ground of chests. As this is always a random chance, you’ll never know when you are or are not missing out on better-identified gear, so it’s always best to have inventory slots available when exploring. It’s best to make constant trips to Hogsmeade to sell items and complete Merlin trials to increase your total inventory space.
When out exploring, destroying your weakest gear items is worthwhile to ensure you pick up any available gear piece. Should you receive an unidentified gear piece, always wait and identify it before choosing what to do with it. These gear pieces can be incredibly powerful, and the possibility of something better being in your inventory should be incentive enough to return to the Room of Requirement and see what you now have.
