Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is the second game in the Warriors sub-franchise for Fire Emblem. Three Hopes is set in the same world as Fire Emblem: Three Houses and features the same characters as Three Houses. Three Hopes is set in the same time period as Three Houses, and it has an entirely new protagonist. However, does this mean that Three Hopes is canonical to the main storyline of Three Houses?

Is Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes canonical to the Three Houses storyline?

What is canonical in Three Houses?

The canonicity of Fire Emblem: Three Houses is complicated. In the original Three Houses game, there are four different routes, with each storyline diverging when Byleth decides which house he wants to teach for. Although the first half of Three Houses is more or less the same in all four timelines, they diverge greatly when war breaks out. Each route has a different ending, and each one is drastically different from the other.

None of the four routes within the Three Houses is more canonical than the other, and it is up to the player to decide what is canon and what is not. It is not as if the four routes exist in four different timelines, since it is up to the player to choose a pair for all the characters. There are over thirty playable characters in Three Houses, so at the end of each route, players can choose multiple pairing options. This means that there are four main timelines with many alternate endings depending on who gets married.

Is “Three Hopes” canon?

As such, there is no main canonical storyline in Three Homes, only several different timelines. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes further complicates things, as the action takes place in a universe where Shez replaces Bylet as the main playable protagonist. Shez then has three more paths to choose from, each with its own storyline separate from the others.

The three paths in “Three Hopes” are unrelated to the main four paths in “Three Homes” and should not be considered canon in relation to the events that occurred in “Three Homes”. However, the backstory and story that was established in “Three Houses” is further developed in “Three Hopes.” This includes the appearance of family members of the main characters who never appeared in Three Houses, and the further development of the personalities of some of the characters. These aspects of the game should be considered canon to the overall mythology of the Three Homes cartoon universe.
