Nintendo decided to keep up with the competition and announced the acquisition of SRD Co. Ltd, a firm with which it has worked on nearly all of its big projects from the Nintendo Entertainment System’s early days (NES).
In context, Nintendo and SRD have collaborated for nearly 40 years. Donkey Kong, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and most recently Game Builder Garage, Ring Fit Adventure, and 1-2 Switch were all developed by the crew.
The company’s development staff presently numbers around 140 people. The transaction is set to close on April 1, 2022.
The purchase of SRD by Nintendo is designed to increase the Japanese company’s manufacturing capacity, according to Nintendo. Nintendo Corporation President Shuntaro Furukawa previously stated that the company’s “DNA” is something it does not want to buy.
Nintendo officials also stated that the purchase of SRD will have a minor financial impact on the corporation.
