After decades of rushed releases and underwhelming games, Sonic Team seems to be going all out for its upcoming open-zone action-platformer “Sonic Frontiers.” That includes the game’s story, which, according to the game’s author, will be “melancholic” in nature.
IGN recently spoke with Sonic Frontiers’ head writer, Ian Flynn, to discuss many aspects of the upcoming game. When asked to describe the tone of the game’s plot, Flynn said:
“Melancholy is a good word for the story as a whole. Sonic’s indomitable spirit carries him through every adventure, and that’s what allows him to help each of his friends with their personal problems. Everyone you meet will have their personality shaped by their interactions with Sonic, and that’s not always a comfortable process.”
In recent years, however, this style of storytelling has been replaced by a lighter and more metaphorical tone. After so many years of short and superficial stories, “Melancholia” may be just what the series needs. An overview of the Sonic Frontiers storyline is as follows:
“Sonic, Tales, and Amy travel to the Starfall Islands to investigate the disappearance of the Chaos Emeralds. Events immediately take a dramatic turn, and Sonic is left alone with many questions. In this story, he has to solve all the mysteries of the islands, save his friends and find out how everything is connected.”
