There are multiple ways you can acquire items in Starfield, including buying from vendors, collecting as rewards, or outright stealing them. However, unlike the first two methods, the third method wasn’t as reliable up until now.
As you might know that getting arrested when carrying stolen items causes you to lose all stolen items along with contraband. This may discourage you from stealing items in the game, no matter how lucrative they might seem. However, there’s clever method that allows you to convert these stolen items into regular items and avoid losing them upon arrest. Continue to reading this guide to learn how.

Removing Stolen Tag From Items
When you steal an item in Starfield, you’ll notice that these items are tagged with a red icon, indicating that they are stolen. Additionally, legally owned items and stolen items are sorted separately, which can make your inventory seem disorganized and difficult to manage. Adding the risk of losing stolen items upon arrest makes it even more important to learn how to remove the stolen tag.
To remove stolen tags from items, follow the steps outlined below:
- Begin by adding stolen items to your personal inventory.
- Visit a Trade Authority and interact with the vendor to the stolen items.
- Sell the stolen items to the Trade Authority vendor, but do not exit the conversation yet.
- Choose the “Buy Back” option to buy back the stolen items.
- With the item has been repurchased from the Trade Authority, the stolen tag will be removed.
Now that you know how to remove the stolen tags from items, stealing shouldn’t feel too daunting anymore. To become a better thief in Starfield, you’ll need to improve stealth and sneaking capabilities of your character.
How To Improve Stealth
As you embark on your Starfaring journey, improving your stealth capabilities should be a top priority. Start by investing in the stealth skill under the physical skill tree. Advance your stealth skill by completing associated challenges, determining whether you’re hidden or if you can be seen.
Unlocking the stealth skill adds a detection meter on your screen when crouching, enabling you to identify whether you’re hidden or visible.
Advancing your stealth rank significantly reduces your detection rate when sneaking behind and around NPCs. Moreover, as your stealth skill improves, so does the damage you deal when hidden.
During your Starfaring journey, you’ll come across plenty of unique weapons and gear, including missable items that are simply begging to be picked up and used. However, the risk of getting caught and losing the rare items is also high, which may prevent you from stealing them in the first place. However, with the Trade Authority exchange method, you can now freely pick up any item you like in the game and also remove the stolen tag.
The key to this method is NOT exiting the selling menu after selling a stolen item to the Trade Authority vendor. Immediately choose the ‘Buy Back’ option to reclaim the stolen item. Exiting the conversation and re-engaging with the vendor will result in significantly inflated item prices.
